PAYDAY 2 Stealth Basics
PAYDAY 2 stealth requires patience, awareness, and careful planning. Unlike loud heists where you shoot your way through, stealth heists reward careful observation and precise timing. Getting detected once doesn't always fail the heist โ but it can escalate quickly if you don't know how to recover.
Core Stealth Mechanics
| Mechanic | How It Works | How to Manage |
|---|---|---|
| Detection | Guards and cameras have a detection meter that fills when they see you | Stay out of line of sight, use cover, crouch to reduce visibility |
| Pagers | Killed guards trigger a pager that must be answered within a limited time | Only kill when necessary, answer pagers promptly, max 4 pagers per heist |
| Civilians | Civilians who see you will call the police or run | Tie them down with cable ties, or avoid them entirely |
| Cameras | Security cameras detect you and can trigger alarms | Shoot them (loud), avoid their view cones, or use ECM jammer |
| ECM Jammer | Jams cameras, pagers, and phones for a duration | Essential for stealth โ use to pass cameras or answer pagers safely |
| Concealment | Lower concealment = harder to detect | Use suppressed weapons, Two-Piece Suit, and concealment mods |
You can only answer 4 pagers per heist. After the 4th guard kill, any additional pager will trigger the alarm. Plan your kills carefully โ sometimes knocking a guard out (with melee) is better than killing, as knocked-out guards don't trigger pagers.
Stealth Build & Loadout
A good stealth build prioritizes concealment, mobility, and utility. Here's the recommended setup for most stealth heists:
Perk Deck
- Hacker (Best): Pocket ECMs give you 2 extra ECM jammers, plus dodge boost when ECM is active. The strongest all-around stealth deck.
- Burglar: Faster pager answering (50% faster), faster bag movement, and reduced noise. Dedicated stealth deck.
- Yakuza: Speed boost at low health โ useful for speedrunning stealth, but risky.
Essential Skills
| Skill | Tree | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| ECM Overdrive Aced | Ghost | Longer ECM duration (+50%), essential for stealth |
| Cleaner Aced | Ghost | Faster body bagging, more body bags |
| Sprinter Aced | Ghost | Faster movement, essential for repositioning |
| Duck and Cover Aced | Ghost | Faster crouch movement, better dodge |
| Nine Lives Aced | Fugitive | Extra down, useful if things go wrong |
| Endurance Aced | Mastermind | More stamina for running |
| Transporter Aced | Enforcer | Faster bag movement, can throw bags farther |
Weapon Loadout
- Primary: Any high-concealment suppressed weapon โ Contractor .308, CMP, or Mark 10
- Secondary: Suppressed pistol โ De Lisle (best for stealth), Chimano Custom, or White Streak
- Melee: Weapon Butt or any fast melee (for knocking out guards)
- Throwable: ECM Jammer (x2 with ECM Overdrive)
- Armor: Two-Piece Suit (maximum concealment and mobility)
- Deployable: ECM Jammer or Body Bag Case
Big Oil: How to Find the Right Engine
The payday 2 big oil engine puzzle is one of the most iconic stealth challenges in PAYDAY 2. On Day 2, you must identify the correct fusion reactor engine among 12 possible engines in the hangar. Taking the wrong engine fails the heist. Here's how to find the right one every time.
Step 1: Gather Intel on Day 1
On Day 1 (the house), you need to find two key pieces of information:
- Fusion Engine Output: Found on a clipboard/laptop in the house โ tells you the correct power output (e.g., 5.8 MW)
- Helium Canister Color / Pressure: Found on a note โ tells you which helium canister is attached to the correct engine
The intel can spawn in several locations: on the kitchen table, in the upstairs office, on the basement desk, or on a clipboard near the server room. Search thoroughly โ you need both pieces of info for Day 2.
Step 2: Analyze the Engines on Day 2
On Day 2 (the airport hangar), there are 12 engines arranged in rows. Each engine has three identifying features:
- Power Output (MW): Displayed on a digital readout on the engine
- Helium Canister: A colored canister attached to the side (blue, green, or no canister)
- Number of Hoses/Tubes: The number of cables connected to the engine
Step 3: Match the Clues
| Intel from Day 1 | What to Look for on Day 2 |
|---|---|
| Output: 5.8 MW (example) | Find engines with digital readout showing ~5.8 MW |
| Helium: Blue canister (example) | Among matching MW engines, find one with blue helium canister |
| Pressure note (if found) | Cross-reference with canister pressure gauge |
The correct engine is the one that matches both the power output and helium canister color from Day 1. There will be exactly one engine that matches both criteria.
1. Not reading the output correctly โ the digital display can be hard to read, get close. 2. Confusing helium canister colors โ blue vs. green can look similar in hangar lighting. 3. Taking the engine without securing the area โ guards patrol the hangar. 4. Forgetting to disable the camera above the engines.
Big Oil Stealth Route Tips
- Enter through the side warehouse door (left side of hangar)
- Take out the patrolling guard near the entrance first
- Use the server room as a safe zone (no cameras inside)
- ECM jam the camera room if you can't reach it
- Have a teammate watch the hangar entrance while you identify engines
Lost Safe: Keycard Location
The payday 2 lost safe keycard is needed to open the security room in the Lost Safe heist (also known as "The Safe" or part of the Reservoir Dogs heist). Finding the keycard can be tricky because it has multiple possible spawn locations.
What Is the Lost Safe Heist?
Lost Safe is a stealth-focused heist where you infiltrate an office building to steal a safe. The keycard unlocks the security room, which contains the camera controls and often the safe itself or intel about its location.
Possible Keycard Spawn Locations
| Location | Where to Look | Difficulty to Reach |
|---|---|---|
| Security Guard Body | On the keycard-holding guard (random patrol guard) | Medium โ must kill/answer pager |
| Front Desk | On the reception desk in the lobby | Easy โ but camera coverage |
| Manager's Office | On the desk in the upstairs manager office | Medium โ guarded area |
| Break Room | On a table near the vending machines | Easy โ usually civilian area |
| Janitor's Closet | On a shelf in the maintenance closet | Easy โ rarely patrolled |
| Civilian | Carried by a random civilian employee | Hard โ must subdue without alarm |
How to Find the Keycard Efficiently
- Start at the lobby โ check the front desk first (most common spawn)
- Observe the guards โ one guard may have a keycard on their belt (visible when close)
- Check the break room โ fast to access, often unguarded
- Move upstairs โ check manager's office and janitor closet
- Subdue civilians last โ only check civilians if all fixed locations are empty
If you have a teammate, split up โ one person checks downstairs while the other goes upstairs. The keycard spawn is fixed per heist instance, so once you find it, you know it won't move. Communicate clearly to avoid searching the same areas twice.
After Getting the Keycard
- Use the keycard to open the security room door
- Destroy or disable the camera system (DVR box / camera control)
- Secure any guards inside the security room
- Use the security room as a safe zone and staging area
- Proceed to locate and secure the safe
Pro Stealth Tips
General Stealth Rules
- Always case the joint first โ walk around in casing mode (mask off) to scout guard patrols, camera locations, and civilian routes
- Learn guard patterns โ every guard has a patrol route. Wait for them to turn away before moving
- Use ECM strategically โ don't waste ECM on easy sections. Save it for camera-heavy areas or when you need to answer a pager safely
- Body management โ always hide bodies in closets, behind crates, or in rooms where no one patrols. A found body triggers the alarm
- Cable tie civilians โ never leave a civilian who has seen you free. Tie them down or they'll call the police
Camera Management
- Shooting a camera makes noise โ only do it if you're sure no guard will hear
- Cameras have a 3-second detection delay โ you can quickly cross their view if you're fast
- ECM jammer disables all cameras in range for the duration
- If you can reach the camera room/security room, disabling the DVR turns off ALL cameras permanently
Multiplayer Stealth Coordination
- Assign roles: one person scouts, one handles guards, one manages bags
- Use voice communication โ call out guard positions and when it's safe to move
- Don't both answer the same pager โ coordinate who takes which guard
- Stay spread out โ if one person gets detected, the others can recover
When Stealth Fails: Damage Control
If you get detected but the alarm hasn't fully triggered: 1) Kill the witness before they call it in. 2) ECM jam immediately to pause pagers/phones. 3) If a guard saw you, kill them and answer the pager. 4) If a civilian called police, you have ~30 seconds before first responders arrive โ use this time to complete objectives or set up for loud.
Reservoir Dogs: The 4 Tapes (Las 4 Cintas)
The Reservoir Dogs heist features a unique objective: finding and collecting 4 cassette tapes (often searched as "consigue las 4 cintas payday 2"). A common question is whether only one person needs to collect the tapes.
Do All Players Need to Collect Tapes?
Only one player needs to collect all 4 tapes for the heist objective to progress. The tapes are shared across the team โ once any player picks up a tape, it counts for everyone. However, having multiple players search for tapes simultaneously speeds up the process significantly, especially on Day 1 where the tapes are scattered across a large area.
Tape Locations (Day 1)
On Day 1 of Reservoir Dogs, the 4 tapes spawn in random locations across the warehouse/garage area. Common spawn points include:
- On desks and tables in office areas
- On shelves in storage rooms
- On top of crates and containers
- In the garage near parked cars
- On counters in the break room
Tape Collection Tips
- Split up โ assign each player a zone to search
- Look for the small black cassette tape model (it glows slightly when you're close)
- Call out when you find a tape so the team knows how many remain
- Once all 4 are collected, the objective updates and you can proceed
- Tapes are not lost if a player goes down โ they remain collected
The Reservoir Dogs heist is played in reverse chronological order โ you play Day 2 first (the warehouse), then Day 1 (the diamond exchange). This is a homage to the non-linear storytelling of the Reservoir Dogs film. Keep this in mind when planning your approach.
Overdrill: First World Bank Secret
The payday 2 overdrill is a secret event in the First World Bank heist that unlocks a hidden vault with massive loot. It's one of the most famous secrets in PAYDAY 2 and requires specific conditions to trigger.
How to Trigger Overdrill
- Play First World Bank on Overkill difficulty or higher (Death Wish recommended for best rewards)
- Reach the vault area โ progress through the heist normally until you're in the vault lobby
- Stand in specific positions โ all 4 players must stand on 4 specific floor tiles in the vault room simultaneously (the tiles form a pattern near the vault door)
- Wait for the drill โ a 2000-second (33+ minute) drill will start on a hidden wall
- Defend the drill โ survive endless enemy waves while the drill completes
- Open the secret vault โ once the drill finishes, a hidden vault opens containing gold, money, and a special mask
Overdrill requires a full 4-player team (AI bots do NOT count โ you need real players). The drill takes over 30 minutes, so be prepared for a long fight. You must not let the drill be destroyed by enemies. The Overdrill secret also unlocks the "But wait, there's more!" achievement and a unique mask pattern.
Overdrill Loot
- Multiple gold bars (worth ~$500k+ each)
- Cash bundles
- A unique Overdrill mask (random pattern/material)
- Massive XP and offshore money payout
- The "But wait, there's more!" achievement
